Skin Problems
Soothe, protect, and watch for change.
Eczema and dry skin
- Itchy, dry, red or scaly patches, often in skin folds.
- Treated with frequent emollients and short courses of steroid cream.
- Avoid soap, long hot showers and known irritants.
Acne
- Blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots on face, chest or back.
- Gentle cleansing twice a day; avoid scrubbing or picking.
- Over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid products.
- A doctor can prescribe stronger creams or tablets for stubborn acne.
Fungal infections
- Athlete's foot, ringworm and thrush look scaly, ring-shaped or itchy.
- Antifungal creams or powders from the pharmacy usually work.
- Keep the area clean and dry; do not share towels.
Rashes and hives
- Note when it started, what touched the skin, and any new medicine.
- Cool compresses and antihistamines ease itching.
- Photograph the rash so changes can be compared later.
Seek medical help urgently if
- A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
- Rapidly spreading redness, heat and pain (possible infection)
- Blistering, peeling skin or a rash with fever
- A mole that changes shape, colour or bleeds
